My Review of Tall Bones by Anna Bailey

Updated: Aug 18, 2022

Published by Doubleday April 2021

Published in the USA as Where The Truth Lies

Emma and Abi join a few other teenagers for a party in the woods. When Emma leaves Abi behind that night, it's the last time she'll ever see her best friend. Abi vanishes without anyone knowing what happened.

The small town of Whispering Ridge has a complex past and so do many of the town folk. The arrival of an outsider stirs things up in the town, bringing about change and revelations while the mystery of Abi's disappearance unfolds.

I found the prose and narrative voice to be spellbinding and it was what ultimately kept me reading. While it isn't the most original plot, the author's tone and delivery was captivating with an authentic style. It's a good mystery with small town drama and a family with some very dark and disturbing secrets.

I would have loved to see Emma's character develop a bit more, especially after everything she went through. The ending felt a little rough in places particularly in terms of pacing and Emma's reaction to events, but overall it's well worth reading especially if you love mystery and drama.
