The House in the Pines

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes

I found The House In The Pines to be quite an original plot and quite compelling. The set up at the beginning lured me in and I was curious to uncover the mystery behind what happened. I was also rather intrigued by Frank, and his elusive and sinister vibes were unsettling.

I would say this is more drama/mystery rather than suspense as there was a lot of backstory and history that broke the pace for me for it to be an edge of your seat thriller, especially during the final few chapters. I found myself skimming over areas throughout the book so I could pick up with the story again. Once the truth was revealed, the climax lost impact for me with the unnecessary explaining and scenes that followed before the final closing.

It's a creative plot and a compelling mystery that's definitely worth reading, especially if you like a very slow burn mystery mixed with a lot of family and character backstory. I think this might be the author's debut novel, in which case I'd be interested to see what's next. There's definitely an authentic and imaginative voice worth reading again.
