Book Review - Below by Kev Harrison

Published by Brigids Gate Press, May 2022

In 1957, a group of workers are trapped inside a Californian gold mine after it collapses unexpectedly. They endure unfathomable circumstances as they fight to stay alive and hold onto reality and their sanity. Unfortunately, the men never make it out and the story of what really happened during their time underground remains buried with them.

Nick, is the grandson of one of the miners and is now a mining engineer himself. He has been haunted by his grandfather’s story ever since he was a child and is determined to return to the mine to uncover the men’s final moments. His expedition includes social medial influencer, Jess and her camera expert, Sophie, who have been hired by a travel channel to film a documentary on the findings.

As the three of them navigate their way through the underground caves, they will discover the unsettling facts of what really happened all those years ago. Can Nick handle the truth and more importantly will the three of them survive the horror lurking in the darkness to tell the tale. Something sinister is waiting for them below.

This was a light and entertaining horror adventure with drama and mystery included. Characters were easy to like and the plot was interesting. I particularly enjoyed the setting in the caves, which added to the sense of dread and tension because the threat of collapse was an additional danger to the horror that was unfolding inside. I also liked the discovery of old diary pages throughout the caves to piece together the past.

I found Below to be an enjoyable read especially if you like adventure and exploration. The length makes it perfect to take with you on a flight or trip - unless you’re about to visit underground caves, then you may want to wait till you get back!
