We're thrilled to talk to the founders of Dusty Attic Publishing, a brand new magazine which launched on October 01st, featuring content that's sure to be perfect for spooky season!
Thank you for agreeing to chat with Haunted Trails! We’d love to know more about Dusty Attic Publishing!
Dusty Attic Publishing is a quarterly literary magazine with a focus on all things weird and whimsical. Our main inspiration was creating a place for odd, fantastical, and sometimes spooky stories and poems, the likes of which could be found in a back corner of an antique store, or locked away in a dusty attic. The first issue is available as a free PDF download on the website from October 1st, 2023!

And tell us, who are the caretakers of the Attic?
We are a pair of weirdos that share an equal amount of passion for writing and reading fantasy and horror.
Jenna (jenjuxtapose) is a Canadian writer, poet, and moss goblin who spends her time procrastinating editing her novel and eating an inordinate amount of baked goods. Dusty Attic is a good medium for procrastinating.
J.L. Holloway (hollhideaway) is a storyteller of many mediums with an embarrassing amount of unfinished projects.
What spooky treasures can we expect to find in the Dusty Attic for the inaugural issue?
Good things. Spooky things. Weird things.
We hope it will provide readers a quick taste of what we have to offer in the Attic. From stories that are a little more whimsical to ones that are downright frightening. And everything in between!
There’s also a talking red panda.
I doubt we'll be able to resist the urge to snoop around the Attic in that case! It sounds perfect for the spooky season! Here at Haunted Trails we're obsessed with Halloween so there's a few more things we need to know!
Favourite films and books for the spooky season?
Jenna: For films, I’d say the OG Halloween, the Disney Channel classic Halloweentown, and Crimson Peak. Books would have to be Pet Sematary by Stephen King, Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly.
Holl: Nightmare Before Christmas, anything The Addams Family, Hocus Pocus, and Beetlejuice are must-watch movies this time of year. I rrecently finally read Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and really enjoyed it!
Who would be your perfect squad to go trick or treating with?
Jenna: Mary Shelly, Vincent Price, Wednesday Addams
Holl: I’m just tagging along with them. That’s a good list!
Forget costumes, you can swap bodies with your favourite horror character for Halloween. Who is it?
Jenna: Lucille Sharpe from Crimson Peak, because THE COSTUMES! (also, it’s Jessica Chastain… come on.)
Holl: Might as well dress in style with Oldman’s Dracula (London look). Plus, you know, all the powers that come with being an ancient vampire.
What's the one Halloween candy that you'd rather fight the scariest of monsters than hand it over?
Reese’s pumpkins!
Give us one song that should be on everyone's Halloween playlist.
Jenna: Stop, Look & Listen, It’s Halloween by Pete Antell
Holl: “This Is Halloween” by Danny Elfman
Finally, what's your ideal way to spend All Hallows' Eve?
Jenna: So. Much. Chocolate. Don’t forget some tarot card reading!
Holl: Snacks, movies, warm beverages, and cozy cuddles.
Jenna, Holl, thank you for taking us behind the scenes at the Attic and for sharing your Halloween favourites! We hope to see you around Haunted Trails!
Happy Haunting!
